Casting notice: Dead broke

Lost Dreams Collective is now casting for an upcoming revival production of Dead Broke, by Will King.

Dead Broke’s hit debut production was presented at the 2022 Toronto Fringe Festival (you can read the buzz here), and the script was originally developed as part of the 2020 Beats + Intentions Playwright's Unit (Expect Theatre, in partnership with the Playwrights Guild of Canada).

The show run will take place at The Theatre Centre Incubator from October 31 to Nov 10 2024, with part-time rehearsals starting the week of Sept 23rd.

Dead Broke will be directed by Calvin Petersen. Calvin has an MTA in Directing from The New Zealand Drama School / Victoria University, has directed with Hercinia Arts Collective, Coal Mine Theatre, Impel Theatre, The Toronto Festival of Clowns, and he was a member of the Outside The March Artistic Accomplice Program.

Show casting will be facilitated by Gordon Harper (Assistant Director) and Will King (Playwright). Final decisions will be made in consultation with Calvin Petersen who is currently on tour in Europe.

About LDC: Lost Dreams Collective is a Toronto based theatre collective dedicated to creating Canadian contemporary work  & presenting classical text in a new light. We aim to develop and produce plays that reflect the narrative of our lives. We are a member of TAPA, and as such, will be Dora eligible.

The Plot: Oliver, a university student, is in trouble. After switching majors and losing all financial support, he begins squatting in an abandoned home to reduce costs and save his relationship. But when the house is revealed to have a sinister past, and someone goes missing, Oliver's life spirals desperately out of control. This surreal horror thriller, and dark ensemble comedy, explores our desires and dependencies in self-preservation, and the systemic reality of affordable housing.

Open Roles (female-identifying, 18-30 years old):

Charlotte - A student. Dating Oliver. (Humorous. Realistic. Kind.)

Laura - Charlotte's best friend. Getting ready for law school. (Protective. Direct. Confident)

At this time, we are especially interested in (and will prioritize applications from) members of equity-priority groups, including BIPOC, Latinx, Asian, and LGBTQIA+ artists, with the goal of creating a racially diverse and representative ensemble.

Additional Details:

Ideal candidates will have some experience with new plays, interest in genre work (thrillers, horror, etc), and will be excited about working in a collaborative environment.
